Edwards' wife has come forward to confirm that her husband is the subject of the recent allegations, explaining that he has been hospitalized for severe mental health issues. In response to this development, the BBC has reopened its investigation following a statement by the Metropolitan Police indicating that there is no evidence of a criminal offense. Initially, the presenter's identity was not disclosed when the allegations surfaced on July 7 through the Sun website.

The report alleged that he had engaged in a financial transaction with a person, who is now 20 years old, for explicit photos when they were 17. However, the wording of the accusation was later revised to specify that the interaction began when the individual was 17. The young person's mother was quoted in the publication asserting that their child used the money received from the photos to feed a crack cocaine addiction.

Despite their attorney dismissing the claims as baseless, the family stands by their statements. In response to the situation, a BBC representative stated, "We will now proceed with that work, ensuring due process and a thorough assessment of the facts," emphasizing the importance of an objective investigation.
