The Homecoming of Julian Assange

The ongoing legal battle of Julian Assange has finally come to a turning point as an agreement in principle has been reached with the US Department of Justice. This agreement paves the way for Assange to begin his journey back to Australia, where his family currently resides. Assange, who has been fighting extradition to the US for years, will now be able to move forward with his life after serving 5 years in a UK prison.

The agreement includes him pleading guilty to one charge related to violating the Espionage Act, with his time served in the UK taken into account. After being flown to Bangkok for refuelling, Assange will head to the Mariana Islands, a US territory in the South Pacific, where a judge will approve the agreement. Due to his distrust of the US, Assange has chosen not to return voluntarily to the continental USA.

Once the agreement is finalized, Julian Assange is expected to return to Australia, reuniting with his wife and two children. The ongoing debate surrounding journalistic freedoms will continue, but for now, Assange can look forward to reuniting with his loved ones in his home country.
