A legal battle has arisen between Open AI and actress Scarlett Johansson over the unauthorized use of her voice in their AI chatbot, Sky.Open AI insists that they did not intentionally copy Johansson's voice and had initially hired an actress for the role.
Despite CEO Sam Altman's request for Johansson to lend her actual voice to the character, she declined, citing similarities to her character in the film 'Her' from 2013.
In a show of solidarity with Scarlett Johansson, SAG-AFTRA has announced the removal of the character 'Sky' from their products.Legal representation for Johansson will be provided by John Berlinski of the law firm Bird Marella in Los Angeles in the event of any legal action against Open AI.
Concerns within the creative industry
The creative industry is facing concerns about potential imitation and substitution in the future.Several newspapers, including The New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune, have filed lawsuits against Open AI and Microsoft, alleging that their AI technology is negatively impacting the newspaper industry by unlawfully using millions of articles to train AI products like Microsoft's Copilot and OpenAI's ChatGPT.
